My Math Story

The first memory of not liking Math was in the 3rd Grade.  When we cam back after Christmas break, we had to do a timed multiplication test every Friday.  If you failed one you had to keep taking it over until you passed.  These were to most stress inducung things I had ever faced in my young Math life!  I even remember her name, however as the internet goes everywhere I will not post it!  Haha!  For the rest of elementary school I was fine and progressed to the satisfaction of my teachers, however still not being the quickest at the 7 and 8 times table for what ever reason.  In 7th grade we started multiplying and dividing fractions and that blew me out of the water!  Help I thought and went to the remediation class  until I understood that concept.  Neesdless to say I did not feel like a great math student and got through high school taking only the things needed to graduate, byw it was not calculus. In college I thought I wanted to be a business major until I took accounting, Yuck!  I failed!  Changed majors and went into elementary education, not much math needed.

I taught 2nd grade for 11 years and did not have math problems until I started teaching ESl and the students in middle and high school needed help.  I will have to admit that the teachers in my middle school are very helpful and I have learned just as much as the students!!!  I can now do middle school math in my sleep except for that 8th grade slope intercept stuff, but I am working on that!

Have a Great 4th!

  1. My experience in elementary was similar except for that was the reason I enjoyed math. I enjoyed it because I knew how to memorize. I really never understood processes until I took my elem ed math courses in college. We were taught math and how to teach math similar to AMSTI. That is when I had my "aha" moment!

I really enjoyed reviewing your blog!

  2. I never had math anxiety, but never really "got it" in school - especially the high-level, abstract concepts. Somehow, I made good grades, but never really understood the practical applications of math or why it was used. I did the same in college - took the least amount of math possible. I haven't seen a math class since I was 18! Hopefully, the math classrooms today give students a better understanding of what they are learning!

    1. I think many are but not all! I hope we are helping some teachers to discover new ways to teach Els! Very Sad!
